Al Jazeera: Payroll outsourcing for the UK’s IT outsourcing industry
The UK is set to get its first major outsourcing project this year, as Al Jazeera’s Payroll Outsourcing series examines how Britain’s outsourcing industry is becoming increasingly influential in the global IT industry.
Al Jazeera spoke to former UK IT executive, Tim Mascarenhas, who helped set up the British outsourcing company, Alixa.
He said that in recent years, British companies have become more reliant on outsourcing, and it is now common practice to have a single office for all employees.
He explained: ‘In the past, a single person would be responsible for all the people, but now there’s an agreement between the business and the individual.’
In fact, there’s even a name for it: ‘the single office’.’
For example, I’ve had my head in the clouds and have managed the cloud services for the BBC and the BBC News website for more than five years, and then I’ve moved to London, and I’ve been working on the BBC’s online services for two years, which is really the biggest challenge that I’ve ever faced in my life.’
The British outsourcing industry has attracted the attention of global media organisations, such as the Financial Times, who have been paying attention to the sector.
In a recent article, the Financial Review reported that Alixas new project, dubbed Alixan, will be the first of its kind in the UK.
Alixa, which provides cloud-based solutions to the BBC, was established in 2016 and is the first British company to receive a global outsourcing contract from Alixabox.
Alixo has a total of 25 employees, and employs more than 1,000 people across Europe and Asia.’
They’re in it for the long haul’Tim Mascarelli, former UK outsourcing executive, AlIXA, tells Al Jazeera that it has been challenging to keep pace with the growth in the outsourcing industry, as it has grown in size and scope.
He told Al Jazeera, ‘For the past five years Alixos head office has been based in a building in central London, so we’ve got a huge team here.’
Our first client was an Indian company called Alixbox, who were looking for a cloud-backed platform to enable them to offer a range of services to their customers, including healthcare, legal and investment banking, all using AlixAox technology.’
Alixo is now one of the most successful UK outsourcing firms, having been awarded over $50m (£32m) in contracts since 2017.
Mascares former boss, Alitza founder and CEO, Tim O’Neill, said that the company was now on a ‘growing and successful path’.’
In the UK, Aliya has a strong presence in the cloud, and is now in the process of expanding into the US, Canada and Europe,’ he said.
‘Aliya is now the largest and most successful outsourcing company in the world, and we’re on the forefront of a fast-growing and rapidly changing industry.”
It’s important for them to have an established reputation’Tim O’Reilly, former British outsourcing executive and Alixaa chief executive, tells the Al Jazeera series, ‘I think they’re in a good position, but we’ve been lucky to be in business with Alixai as a small company and it’s really been an honour to work with them.’
Mascarenis is now a partner at Alixamax, and has a focus on global outsourcing.
He told Al-Jazeera, ‘We’re very confident in our product, and if we can deliver on the expectations of our customers and their business, I think it will go a long way.’
Al Jazeera’s pay-TV news website Al Jazeera America has reported on the growth of the outsourcing sector in the US.
